11 November 2025 Weeding to make shelf space for new books

 


Went in and had an option of three tasks. Circulation, Cataloging, and weeding. I took the Weeding as I know how much it would help the director. Also it would help me learn more of the back end of the Workflow. As you are using the MUSTIE principle for pulling books. Also use judgement based on the patrons. In my experience at the library, I have spoken to many patrons. Like Mr. Smith who like westerns. We have a lot of patrons that prefer wholesome books with a religious theme. In talking to the book club members they have some unique needs. No books over 400 pages. They do not mind a little spice for the selections. They also like ones that spur discussion.

Working in the biography section today. Started in the B-EDW section. Working with a laptop and mobile workstation was going down the list of books in the computer. If they were not in order would clean up the order on the shelves while pulling.

Using the laptop you can see how many times it was checked out. Date it was entered in the system, date of last checkout. You can also find out how many other libraries have the book. If you pull it you do have options of getting it from an inter library loan. During the shift filled up a cart and half of books.

We also had a short recap of questions from the RSA Board meeting. It was about records retention, and the new app that will work with SirsiDynix system.

It was a good day of work. Experienced what we discuss in classes about weeding needs to be scheduled. That way the effort is spread across all the staff and broken up in manageable amounts.

PLA Forces: Force 3 Building Community. Although when you mention weeding you are repurposing books. This allows for newer books to replace them on the shelves. Making the community more aware of new developments. Making the library a bright and inviting space. Force 4 Asset Driven Impact. The new materials enhance the quality of life of the community.

    Shaping a successful collection is always related to the community and it sounds like you understand their wants, which is terrific. Community needs can be trickier. I'm reminded of how things changed during Covid from an informational aspect. Is a library responsible for information needs too? Nice work!

15 October 2025 Illinois Library Association Conference Rosemont, IL Day 2

  The day started with a panel discussion entitled We Do Belong: Candid Conversation on the Future of Libraries. The panel included the director of the two library systems, Past President, President elect and the Current President of ILA. An Academic Librarian and a School Librarian. The discussion was very interesting about what everyone sees in the crystal ball. The funding aspect was a big concern at both the State and National level. The eBook pricing for the licensing of books needs to be resolved.   As the prices of eBooks and Journals rise at a rate that is not sustainable for most libraries. Discussing educational opportunities for library staff there was concern as directors are spending more time with the issues of HVAC, Building maintenance and escalating energy costs.   2 September 2025,   First Day of work in the Library Arrived at the Lillie M. Evans Library and was ready for a day of work in the library. It would be a busy day at the library as the library was starting a new kids program with the Forest Park Nature Center. It was a large turnout. With the Holiday there was a lot of returns, and a four (4) page pull list of books to go on Interlibrary loan.   For the first part of the morning I was working the front Circulation Desk. This was my first experience using the SirsiDynix WorkFlows system that RSA uses. The work was straight forward and had a few errors that were correctable. Processed the Holiday haul of returned books. There were many that were returned from neighboring libraries that would utilize the Interlibrary loan delivery to get them back to their library.
