30 September 2025 Filling in at the main desk, discussing the Directors yearly evaluation process, Discussion of next few weeks assignments.

The end of the month, the library was shorthanded due to an illness. Assisting in the circulation area got to work on my skills at checking out books, Clearing out the book drop and processing the turned in books, Playaway’s, and Vox books.

Several of the returns were from other libraries. Preparing them for return to the correct library. Tagged the books and put them in the bins for pickup to go through the Interlibrary loan system. In reviewing the returned books you check for any damage or defects. One of the books had the spine markings that were faded. Filled out the form to update the markings and put it in the repair area. One book that came back in had some water damage. The Director decided to recycle that volume.  Filled the cart for reshelving the books.

The end of the month also denotes a change in the signage for new programs. Had the opportunity to take down the kids Lego masterpieces. Making room for the fall scenes around the library. Lego Club is quite a popular event at the library. With limited exposure to Lego’s it was really interesting to see all the different shapes and characters.

Did an afternoon pick list for holds at other libraries and sent them out through regular delivery. We also had an OCLC request for two books. Looking in the library system one was checked out we denoted it not available and found the other book and mailed it out as it was out of the state.

The fun thing that trustees have to do every year is the Directors evaluation. This library has a different form than my library. It was interesting to discuss the different ways libraries approach the annual evaluation. Lillie M. Evans library uses a long form one year and a shorter form the next year. Very interesting concept, as new trustees come into the library every two years by election. The first year has the shorter version and as there is less experience. And the non-election year has a more thorough evaluation.

We ended the day discussing future project. Next week will be working on backup information for the new strategic plan. Working with census information and other resources to explore the demographics of the library district.

One highlight of the day was meeting Gayle Johnson-Brackett the Board of Trustees President. We had a lengthy conversation about the history of the library and all the changes that have taken over the years. As a trustee it is always interesting to network with other trustees.

PLA Forces: Force 5 The challenge of leadership. The Directors evaluation is a tense subject for trustees and directors. It is a yearly function of the board. This day I had a chance to review the documents and the process from the Directors view. Then later that day. I met the Board President and had a chat about how they handled the process. They had a little different view. It was interesting to see how they were similar on some points and strayed away from the norm on a few others. As the Director is the only employee employed by the Board. The Board needs to define goals or process and tweak goals that the Director requests for the next year.
