2 September 2025,  First Day of work in the Library

Arrived at the Lillie M. Evans Library and was ready for a day of work in the library. It would be a busy day at the library as the library was starting a new kids program with the Forest Park Nature Center. It was a large turnout. With the Holiday there was a lot of returns, and a four (4) page pull list of books to go on Interlibrary loan.  For the first part of the morning I was working the front Circulation Desk.

This was my first experience using the SirsiDynix WorkFlows system that RSA uses. The work was straight forward and had a few errors that were correctable. Processed the Holiday haul of returned books. There were many that were returned from neighboring libraries that would utilize the Interlibrary loan delivery to get them back to their library.

We are taught in our library classes and through the American Library Association documents the confidentiality of the records. Kept that in mind when examining the records of the books that were being checked in today.

The second half of the day was loading books from the monthly book sale that ended on August 30th. This made room for the programming that would take place in the room on Wednesday. It seems that libraries all over have a shortage of meeting rooms.  Packed up the books in boxes and put them on carts for pickup.

The recipient of the books was a gentleman that has 30 plus little libraries in the area that he will use these volumes in.

PLA Forces: Force 2:The  evolving role of the public library. Today made me think that the library is bigger than the building. Many of the books we processed as returns were not checked out through our library. The patrons visited a nearby library and checked out materials. The patron brought the books to our library to return to a library 20 miles away. This is an example of consortia working to benefit the patron.  Interactive borrowing from other libraries to fill needs that our library lacked.

Work Time : Six Hours Semester total: 7 hours

  1. Hi, Going forward, each entry should make a direct, numbered reference to an appropriate set of standards. PLA standards seem appropriate here. https://www.ala.org/pla/leadership/development/forces
